Users

People who read ebooks deeply across desktop, mobile, web, and e-ink devices. They use Readest to read, navigate, look up, annotate, listen to, and organize books while keeping their library and reading state consistent across platforms.

Product Purpose

Readest is an open-source, cross-platform ebook reader for immersive and focused reading. Success means the book remains central while reading tools are powerful, discoverable, accessible, and quiet enough not to interrupt concentration.

Brand Personality

Calm, capable, and content-first. The product should feel confidently minimal, dependable across platforms, and respectful of sustained attention.

Anti-references

Avoid interfaces that compete with the reading surface through loud brand color, excessive chrome, decorative cards, shadows, gradients, bouncy motion, or platform-specific visual clichés. Do not copy Material elevation or use color and hover as the only signals of hierarchy.

Design Principles

  • Keep the reading surface primary and let tools recede when they are not needed.
  • Make deep-reading workflows direct, predictable, and recoverable.
  • Preserve a coherent identity across desktop, mobile, web, and e-ink environments.
  • Use restrained hierarchy and clear action vocabulary instead of decorative emphasis.
  • Treat accessibility and localization as core product capabilities.

Accessibility & Inclusion

Support full keyboard navigation and screen readers including VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA, and Orca. Meet WCAG AA contrast targets, provide visible keyboard focus, respect reduced motion, use logical RTL layout properties, maintain 44 px mobile touch targets for consequential actions, and keep every workflow legible in e-ink mode.
