SIMBAD Astronomical Database (CDS Strasbourg)

Base URLs

TAP endpoint (recommended):

Authentication

No API key required. All endpoints are public.

Example — look up object by name:

Example — cone search (objects within 5 arcmin of coordinates):

Note: radius in CIRCLE is in degrees (5 arcmin = 0.083 deg).

Example — objects by type (e.g., all pulsars):

2. Identifier Query (simple lookup)

3. Coordinate Query

Rate Limits

No formal rate limits documented. SIMBAD requests that automated scripts include reasonable delays between queries. Very large TAP queries may time out; use TOP N to limit results or switch to async TAP at /simbad/sim-tap/async.
