Char works with any application on your computer - Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Discord, and more. It captures system audio, so it doesn't depend on specific integrations.
Yes! Char captures your microphone input, so you can record in-person meetings, phone calls, or any conversation where you're using your computer's microphone.
Char supports transcription and AI features in 90+ languages across multiple providers. You can select your main language and add additional spoken languages in Settings > Language & Vocabulary. The main language is used for summaries, chats, and AI-generated responses, while spoken languages help improve transcription accuracy in multilingual conversations.
See the full language support table for a detailed breakdown by provider.
Yes. Speaker diarization (identifying who said what) is available through select cloud transcription providers on Char Pro. Accuracy depends on the provider and audio quality. For best results, ensure each speaker has a distinct audio source. Local transcription via Whisper does not currently support diarization.
Yes. Pinned tabs are saved automatically and restored when you relaunch Char, so your workspace stays the way you left it.
Yes. Go to Settings > General and use the timezone dropdown to override the automatically detected timezone. This affects how session timestamps are displayed in the sidebar timeline.
Yes! Char supports backlink mentions. Type @ in a note to search for and link to other notes, people, or companies. Mentions are displayed as clickable tags that navigate to the referenced item.
Yes. Press <kbd>⌘</kbd> + <kbd>⇧</kbd> + <kbd>F</kbd> to open the Advanced Search tab, which uses Tantivy-powered full-text search to find matches across all sessions. You can filter by type (meeting notes, people, organizations) and date range (today, this week, this month). Results highlight matching text in context.
Within a note or transcript, <kbd>⌘</kbd> + <kbd>F</kbd> opens an inline search bar with case-sensitive and whole-word matching options. Press <kbd>⌘</kbd> + <kbd>H</kbd> to toggle find-and-replace mode, which supports replacing individual matches or all matches at once.
The calendar tab (<kbd>⌘</kbd> + <kbd>⇧</kbd> + <kbd>C</kbd>) supports week, 3-day, and day views. You can switch between them using the controls at the top of the calendar. Events display inline with time slots, and clicking an event opens a popover where you can create a session from it. See Calendar for setup instructions.
Yes. If you previously ignored a calendar event, right-click on it in the sidebar timeline and select "Unignore" from the context menu to restore it.
Yes. On macOS, right-click the Char icon in the Dock to see a context menu with a New Note option. Clicking it creates a new note and brings Char to the foreground.

The Memory tab (under Settings > Intelligence) lets you define custom vocabulary — names, acronyms, and technical terms that appear frequently in your meetings. These terms are passed to the transcription and AI providers to improve recognition accuracy.
Yes. When you stop a recording, Char can automatically trigger AI-powered note enhancement to generate a summary from the transcript. This also works after uploading or retranscribing a recording.
Yes. When a session is linked to a calendar event, the event description appears as a metadata chip in the session header. Click it to view the full event details.
Yes. In Settings > General > Storage, Char detects your installed Obsidian vaults and lets you pick one as the storage location. Your meeting notes, transcripts, and contacts are then stored directly inside the vault as plain Markdown files — fully accessible from Obsidian's sidebar and search. You can also choose any custom folder.
Yes. Char supports connecting multiple Google or Outlook calendar accounts simultaneously. Each connected account syncs its events to your sidebar timeline. You can manage connections in the account integrations settings.
